Creating an Altar

You know, this is something I don't know much about, really.  There have been whole books written about sacred space and it's creation.  And just about any introductory or intermediate Wiccan, Witchy, or Pagan book covers creating an altar.   For me, an altar is so very personal ... I am still struggling to find something that is, well, just right.  I've come close a few times, but then I end up having in-laws over or something such that I *have* to dismantle what I've created.  I know that it really shouldn't bug me that much - that it's more a state of mind to be maintained, perhaps.  But in my heart, it just seems so important to have one permanent part of my physical life dedicated to my spiritual journey.

One book that has been very, very important to me as I struggle to create an altar is Circles, Groves & Sanctuaries : Sacred Spaces of Today's Pagans compiled by Dan and Pauline Campanelli.  It's out of print now, but it's a very good read, and I highly recommend it!*  Another important read for me has been the household altar chapter of The Magical Household by Scott Cunningham and David Harrington.

The only other suggestion that I feel qualified to make concerning altars is to follow your heart.  The only thing you need to create an altar is a dedicated heart and spirit! :)

* Try looking for it on eBay (I see a copy of it up there once in a while - that's where I found mine.) or at Powell's Books.   You might also try searching the Advanced Book Exchange.
